I Cured My Gout

This is my story of learning, healing and recovery. This message is intended to inform and is not medical advice. I hope to inspire others to re-evaluate gout as a chronic symptom stemming from a larger problem and not a singular affliction.

There is a sinister underlying culprit.

My Story

Like many people suffering from gout, apart from talking with my Doctor, I searched for effective remedies everywhere I could find some information. Google, Youtube and any other Health forum I could find.  Only to find videos from doctors explaining the cause, symptoms and treatments.  Articles and articles about how to manage your diet and avoid high purine foods.  Some who claim to have tips and tricks on how to alleviate the pain fast.  What I could not find were any videos or stories about anyone that had actually fully alleviated the gout and restored their health.  This is the reason why I am creating this page.  In an effort of providing hope for others like me.  Talk about what I did to change my life, stop suffering from daily pain and maybe help a few people.

What is a 'Cure'?

By definition a cure is (According to Google):

  1. relieve a person of the symptoms of a disease or condition
  2. a substance or treatment that cures a disease or condition
  3. restoration to health
  4. a solution to a problem

What I Learned

Gout was a symptom of something more physiologically global and not just a result of eating beef and drinking beer.

Uric Acid

Based on most of the information out there I was under the impression that by managing uric acid levels in my body it would reduce and ultimately eliminate my gout attacks.  I was painfully mistaken.  My yearly Uric Acid lab test results showed although they were within ‘normal’ range I was still stricken with recurring gout. The reality was that I was following outdated advice. I was taking prescription medication targeting the elimination of excess uric acid, trying every home remedy and avoiding all the foods I loved to eat. I almost gave up on finding a cure.  I even gave up steak and beer…  Has there ever been a more wonderful combination of delights that men suffering from gout must learn to live without?  Not for me.  The pain was affecting almost every joint in my body and had become so bad that it was beginning to reduce my mobility and strength.  I was done suffering, not just from the pain and swelling but mostly from not being able to enjoy life.

Insulin Resistance

My father suffers from gout and is diabetic. By my 49th birthday I had pretty much  accepted the fact that I was going to  endure this affliction as well for the remainder of my life.  I had my first gout attack in my late twenties which I initially thought was a sprained ankle but could not remember hurting myself…  Flare ups continued for over 2 decades until I learned of a very rational but little known association between uric acid and my blood sugar in late 2023.  A friend, that also suffers from gout, sent me an article that described how sustained elevated blood sugar levels leading to insulin resistance was associated to the human body’s inability to properly eliminate excess uric acid: Uric Acid: A New Metric for Heart Health  This purposeful change to managing my blood sugar and more importantly, working to prevent insulin resistance, was a completely different way of understanding why gout occurred in my body.

Elevated Blood Sugar

To this point I had simply been working on addressing a single symptom of a larger issue directly associated with sustained elevated blood sugar.  What I had not considered was that uric acid is a vital enzyme the human body naturally creates and uses to eliminate waste. The problem was that my body was just not healthy enough to successfully get rid of the excess.  To think that my body was capable of not only removing excess uric acid when elevated but also using it to help manage toxicity was new for me.  Coming to the realization that excess blood sugar caused uric acid to remain high, accumulate over time and crystallize in my joints causing inflammation and pain. This new understanding made me rethink my approach to curing gout.

Realization and Understanding

The key was moderation and eliminating the excess sugar I consumed.  This allowed my body to utilize uric acid as it is designed to and not allow it to accumulate. Most of us consume without clearly understanding the long term effects to our system.  We end up walking around feeling horrible and attribute it to other causes like lack of sleep, stress or mood.  Then we are misinformed and trained to treat the symptoms vs the root cause of the problem.

I am NOT a medical professional.  I am a simple man, father and husband that was in a failing state of health. I thought I was following the right advice and practicing the right corrective measures to regain my health.  I now feel compelled to share my experience and hope someone will read this story or view my videos and learn what took me years to understand.  Do your own research and do what is best for you at your own pace.

I cannot claim that this will work for every person but the bottom line is that reducing sugar consumption WILL in fact improve your health, allow your body to function more efficiently and with the support of your medical professional aid to achieve optimal health.

After working on my health for more than 13 months I feel like a completely new person.  I no longer have pain or constant inflammation.  I have not had a single gout recurrence.  I have improved my strength and lost weight.  I practice my tennis and enjoy my meals for their nutritional value as much as the flavor.  I can eat anything!  I have tested this and when I say anything, that means anything.  I don’t deprive myself of what I crave including ice cream, beef, shrimp, oysters or beer, you name it!

"It is not accurate to say that I feel AMAZING because the plain truth of it is that I actually am finally feeling ‘normal’.  This is the way my body is supposed to work, feel and perform."

After decades of pain and misunderstanding the problem my body was always aching, which I could not attribute simply to approaching 50 years of age.  I was taking IBUProfen daily to help manage the pain and the only thing that helped my gout flare ups was a prescription steroid pack which my Doctor stated was not a solution.  However, even my Doctor never talked about how my blood sugar could be related to gout or how addressing one would affect the other.

The truth of the matter was that a healthy body can manage both regardless of what you eat.  The key was moderation and reducing the one thing that was at the root of all my problems.  Sugar, fructose, glucose or whatever you wish to call it. It is added to almost all brightly colored and cleverly packaged products.  Sugar is the most common form of poison we consume on a daily basis in our food and drinks.  It is a challenge to manage and does take dedicated will power to effectively stop consuming excess sugar but the results speak for themselves and for me there was no choice.
It was necessary.

Are you at the point today where I was then?

Does your health depend on this change?

Is it also necessary for you?
